Bernie Garcia

October 31, 1924 ~ November 18, 2017 (age 93) 93 Years Old
Bernardita (Bernie) Garcia de Varela was born on October 31, 1924 to Nemecino and Irene Varela in Pecos, NM and left this world for a new Horizon on November 18, 2017. She will be greatly missed.
Bernie married Jose C. Garcia in 1944 and they were together until his death in the year 1999. She was also preceded in death by her sisters: Dolores (Pee Wee) Duran, Lucy Segura, Josie Roybal, and Toni C de Baca; her half-sisters Lina Lucero and Rosina Ortega, and her half-brothers Albino Varela and Adelaido Chavez. The only surviving sibling is her sister Mary Roybal.

Her ninety-three years of life were filled with hardship growing up with need and simplicity during the economical bad times of the depression. She worked at an early age with household chores and then was sent to help other relatives in Pecos. She moved to Santa Fe at a young age because an older cousin had recommended her to a wealthy family who needed help with their young children. The wealthy family loved her and offered to adopt her. Her crying remark was “I have a family.” Later, she worked in a Greek owned restaurant where she discovered the fun and turmoil of working in that type of environment. She became one of Santa Fe’s most wanted chefs and worked for several prominent restaurants in Santa Fe – downtown, on Canyon Road, and down Cerrillos Road.

She loved her family very much and enjoyed traveling everywhere she could – up to Canada, West to California, East to Boston, and South to Mexico. She loved her sisters and nieces and enjoyed traveling with them, especially to Las Vegas, Nevada. In her late years, casinos became a great diversion.
Bernardita leaves behind her three children: Son Apololonio F. Garcia, wife Veronica (Crusita), their children Apolonio Jr., wife and family; Dawn Barela, spouse and family; Joseph Garcia; and Martin Garcia. Daughter Dolores Fresquez, spouse Amarante and four sons Anthony, wife and daughters; Alan Fresquez; Donald and wife and daughters, and David, wife, and daughter and son. Bernie’s youngest son Joe Carl Garcia, wife Sharmaine and children son Anthony and daughter Sarah. There are additional great-grandchildren who will also miss her.

Her services will be held Thursday, November 30, 2017 at St. Francis Cathedral. A rosary will be recited at 9:00 a.m. and mass will follow at 10:00 a.m. The burial will take place at the Veteran’s National Cemetery at approximately 12:45 p.m.
