Henry was born in Allison, Colorado, and was one of 12 children of Manuel and Sinforosa Salazar. His dad was a railroad foreman on the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, Chili Line, Durango - Silverton, the current Cumbres & Toltec Railroad. The Salazar family settled in Velarde, NM and Henry started high school and graduated from Espanola High. As a teenager, he played trumpet and alto saxophone with Cippie Padilla and the Melody Kings. After graduating, Henry worked for Zia Company in Los Alamos and shortly after joined the Army. He was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. In 1951, he married his high school sweetheart June Martinez. After the service, Henry continued his education and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in accounting from the College of Santa Fe. His career in finance led him to working for the State of NM, Saint John’s College, the University of Albuquerque, Northern NM Community College, the office of NM Attorney General and the NM Department of Labor.
