MARILYN JOYCE MONTOYA APRIL 6,1936- NOVEMBER 8, 2022
Joyce Montoya, beloved wife, mother, grandmother passed away after a long battle with adrenal insufficiency which caused declining health and complications. Born in Las Vegas, NM to Olga Torres, she was the oldest of 5 children. She graduated from Fremont HS in Los Angeles, CA in 1953, and returned to New Mexico to attend Highlands University. She earned her BA and MA in Physical Education and counseling, and went on to teach physical education to many students in the Taos and Santa Fe Public Schools for 34 years. Joyce loved to coach, and coached the entire gamut of sports, from field hockey to basketball, volleyball and track. After retirement in 1989, Joyce stayed very active in tennis leagues, Senior Olympics and helped establish the pickle ball community in Santa Fe. In 1958, she married Frank L Montoya from Las Vegas, and enjoyed 64 years of marriage, residing in Santa Fe for the past 60 years. She was very proud of her 2 children - Nikki Montoya Sides, MD( married to Steven Sides, MD) from Greeley, CO and Francisco Montoya, BS in IT from Gilbert, AZ. Joyce adored her 5 grandchildren, Mitchell Sides, Zachary Sides, Corrin Sides, Sophia Montoya, and Gabriel Montoya, who loved their Grammy very much. We are so grateful to Olivas Sisters Home Care for taking such good care of Joyce these past three years, especially her main caregiver Lorena Rivera, who became her faithful companion and friend. We are announcing that there will be no immediate services until Spring. Further information will be announced at a later time.
